2.2 hdi DW12 Issue
Hi, my gf's 2.2 Hdi estate died on her this weekend- she said she was just going along normally then noticed a severe lack of power, which finally ended in black smoke coming from the engine bay and the car shutting down.
The EML had been on for a few months with the ever-helpful 'anti pollution fault' displayed on start-up, but the car was driving fine with no issues like limp-home mode or anything, except in the last month the ASR/ESP fault light would come on occasionally. The car lives quite far away from me so I hadn't had a chance to investigate the EML etc faults.
It still runs, but quite roughly, and with what sounds like the turbo running full-whack and a high-pitched whine to boot. After revving a little you get grey, then black smoke coming from the turbo/DPF area at the back of the engine...
I know when the codes were last read it said DPF additive level low/faulty and I'm wondering if the filter has finally clogged?
Any suggestions appreciated!

Re: 2.2 hdi DW12 Issue
Hi, it could be the turbo, as if the DPF has been blocked for some time then its a chance it has clogged completely and the back pressure has ruined the turbo seals..??
Maybe the EGR is blocked?
Blocked fuel filter?
If you are local to Bournemouth I'm happy to have a peek ( I have the Peugeot diagnostic equipment ) but I'm no mechanic.

Thanks- I tried disconnecting the EGR vacuum line which made no difference, though I guess if it was blocked/stuck anyway might have no effect.
I am a mechanic but for classic cars mostly... so thanks for the offer, I work in Dorchester but if we can't get to the bottom of things once the car's back down here then I might need the diagnostics!

Definitely worth checking - pipe from the top of the intercooler to the air doser assembly should go pretty much rigid when you rev it up [/inuendo]

Re: 2.2 hdi DW12 Issue
Thanks for the replies... we've had it on the ramp and there were no obvious spilt hoses etc, it sounds like a high pressure noise (like the turbo on full chat/and almost like a really badly slipping belt) just at idle, coming from the turbo/cat area. Giving it a little bit of gas and going over 1000rpm 'tuned' & got rid of the noise, and it drove but very juddery like a blocked fuel filter and won't go over 1500rpm.
So far we've tried removing/blanking the EGR, disconnecting the turbo's vacuum line, and unplugging MAF... no change at all. I was thinking of changing the fuel filter but but not sure how that would explain the noise..?
Then when off the ramp idling there was a very loud pop/bang noise... the whistle/whine then became more of a 'hiss'... no smoke though strangely... So shut it off quickly!, again nothing obvious in the engine bay...

Re: 2.2 hdi DW12 Issue
Just an update on this if anyone's interested- took off the DPF/Cat today and the DPF was completely blocked with a thick layer of soot and caked-on EOLYS fluid. One of the DPF pressure rubber hoses had burst open which must have been the loud bang I heard before as all other hoses seem ok. Cleaned most of the crap out of the DPF with a pressure washer and have left it overnight to dry out, back together tomorrow hopefully!
I ran the car and took a short drive and it was back to normal (obviously with a louder exhaust/turbo noise with the centre section missing), but revved up ok and the turbo seems to be fine. So fingers crossed...

Good to hear you've got to the bottom of it.
Pressure washer works for a while, SDS plus chisel is more effective.

Shouldn't it have had a "particulate filter stuffed full of shite" light up on the dash?

Re: 2.2 hdi DW12 Issue
I read the 'official' way to clean it was by pressure washer so figured I'd try that, (plus issues with sensors etc if completely removing it) I suspect it hadn't been cleaned since the car was built and at 286k miles well overdue!
Only had the car for 3 months so the previous owner (in his 80s) must have got the blocked filter message and just carried merrily along...
Car is back together now and *touches wood* running fine, free-revving and flying along nicely.
