Not quite a 406 owner yet!

Hi all I'm looking at getting a 406 in the next few weeks. Its the only car I've found that fits what I need quite well. Estate, desiel, manual, easy to work on, part cost, etc etc
I have nail it down to a few cars most of them are the 2.0HDI but one is the 2.2. I am quite drawn to the 2.2 due to POWER!!! :lol:
My main driving is about 300miles a week and 95% of that is motorway!

I have a few questions. 2.0 or 2.2 Pro's and cons?
Anything to look for on a 2.2? (found loads of info on 2.0)
Whats a better motorway car 2.0 or 2.2?
I like to fiddle with cars (tuning, add other options, etc) is the 2.0 or 2.2 harder to work with?

I used to have a 205 1.8 deisel (non-turbo) that went for ever but sadly the build quality could not!!

Hi Chris - welcome :cheesy:

If I were in your shoes I would probably go for a 2.0 110, as it is the most economical, and the best all-rounder for driving - it can also be remapped to 140bhp which is more than a standard 2.2Hdi. There are no FAPs to worry about, the vacuum system is simpler and it has a standard flywheel so long term maintenance is easier/cheaper.

The 2.0 90 is a cracking little car and the most robust engine choice, but its less economical than the 110 as it has to work a bit harder on journeys, and it take a while to get it up to speed....

I have a 2.2Hdi, as do a few of us here, which can suffer from vacuum issues, FAP issues and less MPG, but once these issues have been remedied ( VW anyone? ) then its a cracking car with a good 160bhp while still getting 40mpg round town and 55mpg on a run.

Both the 2.0 and the 2.2 are basically the same block/layout, so not much between them for working on.

As for buying a second hand one - the 2.2Hdi seems to fetch a lower price than the 110 due to the fear factor, which will work in your favour once sorted - there are loads of 406 estates on tinterweb, try to find one with good history, not necessarily low mileage as these cars can last a long time. An ex private hire 406 was recently sold that had covered over 448,000 miles.

Try also to get a GLX or higher spec, as the price difference between these and the lower spec LX's is negligible, but the GLX can be retrofitted with cruise, leather etc should you wish.

Opinion is probably evenly split between 2.0 & 2.2 HDi's, both are good cars, but if you're mainly interested in performance 2.2 is the way to go.
There's probably very little in it between a 2.0 110 & a 2.2 on the motorway, they have similar gearing, (the 2.0 HDi 90 has shorter legs). All 406's are great mile munchers.

My daily commute, (all main road/motorway), amounts to 300 miles a week too. I'm on my second 2.2 and my 7th year of owning one and honestly can't think of anything better for the job.

In fairness, a 2.0 is a little simpler, will return about 5 mpg more and doesn't have a dpf.

Your choice.

I have a re-mapped 110 that's currently about 145bhp, it's a great car but I must confess that sometimes I wish I'd bought a 2.2
Mainly due to towing the caravan :oops:.
But also due to the fact that I have driven doggy's very well sorted one & it flies :mrgreen:
( it was he that re-mapped mine :cheesy: )

2006 206 1.4 16v sport in Aegean blue ( wife's shopping trolley :roll: )

pp2000 owner / user, can offer Diagnostic's / fault code, reading / clearing for beer tokens in Leicestershire.
