I wouldn't really expect to find a decent anything on the anticipated budget.

Re: How many forum users still actually drive a 406
Missed an opportunity last week - one of our suppliers sold his 12-plate 508 2.0 HDi SW & bought a Zafira.
It wasn't mint but looked tidy, 150k miles, was going to need a clutch/dmf soon, dpf warning light on and he'd damaged one alloy.
So a few bob to sort out but he sold it for £850
(I found out 3 days too late).
My bro's just bought an 07 407 2.2 GT HDi SW, tidy looking, 160k miles, OK apart from a dead hard disk in the head unit.
Some mug who never learns* will attempt to sort it for him, (of course), with much appreciated technical help and advice from our resident 407 guru.

We have a 508. It replaced the bastard 307cc from hell. Which replaced a lovely 407 2.2 petrol in burgundy with cream leather. Long story. Don't get me started...
Short version:
The 508 is a more worthy successor to the 406 than was the 407. The 508 is 'normal' whereas the 407 is so wacky and French that it makes more sense if you think of it as being a Citroen.
Driving the 2.0 140 feels more like my 406 HDi 90 than my 2.2 407. Made me realise how special the bi-turbo is.
Disregarding the different engines, I'd choose the 407 because I like the wacky Frenchness.

Imagine a barren world where rwb sits in the corner of a darkened basement, water dripping from the ceiling, rodents gnawing at things, he's tied to an old chair, a slither of daylight casts a hopeful beam of light across his forehead whilst a slave repeatedly slaps him around the face with a large dead fish. This is his life, all his life.
This is the definition of "I like the French wackiness" of privately-funded motoring

Very picturesque
That sounds almost like the old guy in the basement eating snails scene in Delicatessen.

French? Yes. Wacky? Oh dear me yes.
By the by, is anyone else watching Cold War Motors slowly rebuilding an SM on yewtoob? Beyond wacky...
