Re: Those forgotten Automotive smells

Leaded petrol exhaust from a car with no catalytic converter.

It's not really forgotten, however. I get to experience it every year at the Copenhagen Historic Grand Prix :-)

Re: OIL ??

5W40 full synthetic Total Quartz 9000.

It's what Peugeot recommends and it is usually quite inexpensive for a full synthetic oil.

Re: Still running on me Winter Tyres!

That shouldn't influence your choice to run synthetic oil, however.

Synthetic oil is always a better choice for engine longevity and wear than a conventional oil, even if it ends up burning a bit more.

Re: Still running on me Winter Tyres!

It gets burnt in the cylinders, there will always be a slight oil residue on the cylinder walls, otherwise the rings would ride on them with no lubrication. All engines burn some amount of oil, it's just part of normal operation. The usual cause for increased oil consumption that isn't related to le...

Re: Still running on me Winter Tyres!

I have exactly the same thing to worry about on the 2.2 petrol Coupe - they like to burn off oil. I wonder if it's something common to most early variable valve timed engines? The Celica is a VVTi engine as well. No, it's nothing related to that. The VVT on the 2.2 is managed by a valve that moves ...

It looks like hose #8 on those diagrams. I've patched it up with some tape.

Which hose is this?

I was rummaging around under the bonnet, trying to identify the cause of the rattly/resonance-y sound my 406 (2.2L EW12J4) makes at ~1900 RPM, when I noticed this hose looking a bit worse for wear. Can anyone identify it? It seems to be going to the air filter box, but I'm not 100% sure. It's on the...

Re: Russian Counterfeit Engine Oil uncovered

That's absolutely amazing, they even make sure the jugs and labels match the real thing.

Probably not a good idea to buy motor oil from Ivan down at the pub, for less than half price. Then again, buying anything from Ivan down at the local pub, for less than half price was probably never a good idea.

Re: Sticking handbrake.

I'll give the handbrake drag a go,it goes off with such a bang sometimes i'm scared i'm going to rip the shoes from the backplates. That's what happened to mine. The brake shoe lining detached because it was stuck to the drum, and somehow got twisted and completely locked up the rear wheel. The mec...

Re: Sticking handbrake.

Make sure you drag the handbrake for 5-10 seconds every other week or so, maybe more often if the weather is damp.

The sticking happens because the handbrake on a car with 4-wheel disk brakes doesn't see any wear normally, letting it build up rust etc.

Re: Slowing things down (driving)

Unfortunately, you can only change your own driving style.

In 4 years of 406 ownership, I have had three incidents requiring insurance involvement. All three were due to others drivers being inattentive, aggressive or just completely incompetent.

Re: Slowing things down (driving)

It's more relaxing with rising levels of smugness :? I discovered this as well. I stay at the speed limit +10kph on the speedometer and just relax, let the speed freaks pass me by. I'll probably catch up to them at the next light, anyway. It feels good not being in a state of constant annoyance at ...

Re: 406 vs 307 so far...

I had a 206+ with the 1.4 HDi as a courtesy car the last time my 406 was in for a service. That car was unbelievably lethargic, I can't imagine how bad it must be in the bigger and heavier 307. I have a 206 with the 1.4 petrol as a courtesy car right now, and there is absolutely no comparison. It's ...

Re: Oh Bugger! (Suspect handbrake shoe lining loose)

Sounds like the handbrake bits within the drum, you were lucky* as very often the wheel locks on some cars. This happened to me during a left turn in a busy intersection, not my idea of a relaxed drive. I was told by the mechanic to drag the handbrake hard-ish for 5-10 seconds once a month or so, t...
