Re: How many forum users still actually drive a 406

I still have one, mostly driven by my wife. I would probably have one too if they hadn't got so ridiculously expensive. I still think they are the best car I have driven in over 60 years of motoring, certainly the most reliable. I now have an equally old C220 Cdi Merc estate, its nice but I still fe...

Re: My baby is multiplying.............

I had two light metalic blue 406 estates for a few years which confused people, only got one now but I sold the other one to a mate of mine who lives locally so people still get confused.

Re: Help, trying to remove head 2.0 hdi

Haven't done that job for many years, last one was a 2.1 XM head must be over 10 years ago. I have just fitted a thermostat to a Merc 220 diesel, pig of a job, all the fuel lines had gone hard and I broke a connection and had to make up a new pipe. Proper job that (as they say down here) I don't thi...

Re: PP2000 help

I have two Lexia/PP2000 neither of which I can get to work although they did when I first installed the software, I am running XP on a laptop, it lets me get as far as entering the model but wont connect so I've given up on it now. I've been running 406's for about 10 years now and so far have been ...

Re: going to have a go at welding the sills !

For any substantial welding I still use my 40 year old stick welder, I get on much better with that - probably because I have had more practise with it.

Re: going to have a go at welding the sills !

I use a gas less one because I do most of my welding outside and the wind tends to blow the gas away.

Re: going to have a go at welding the sills !

Having never had rust in a 406 before, I took the wife's in for MOT a couple of months ago and he spied a small hole in the sill, after he had investigated it most of it was laying on the floor. I debated whether to have it repaired but in view of the rest of the car being OK and the ridiculous pric...

Re: need advoce maf sensor

I haven't found that the MAF makes a tremendous amount of difference, it only seems to be effective below 2000 rpm and doesn't make an earth shattering difference there. I have changed the MAF over between both of mine and still one seems to perform better than the other which ever MAF it has. What ...

Re: P1198 error code - Peugeot 406 HDi

There is a fuel pressure regulator on the back of the HP pump, I had this cause problems with a C5 with a similar engine. It has a very fine filter on it and you can't even see the holes, it looks like a stainless steel tube. I have had this regulator cause: poor starting when hot, hunting and the p...

Re: fan motor resistor, compressor, blower motor resistor, thermostat

My aircon does the same, runs cold until you turn it off, I didn't know it was supposed to do otherwise. Regarding you cooling fans, is the engine getting hot enough to initiate both fans on full?

Re: Sluggish and surging?

Try disconnecting the MAF first and see if that evens it out. Has the fuel filter been changed lately?

It may possible be the same as the 2.0 Hdi, most of the rest of the system is.

Re: Tyre profile

You really need a set of 15" wheels which is what most 406's use anyway, all of mine have anyway, yours must be a late one. They use 195/65/15" which do give a better ride. I have to drive over a forest track to reach the road so I understand your problem. Your choice of tyres makes a lot of differe...

Re: Now look who's got a Volvo...

Looks very comfortable. Due to the lack of 406's at a sensible price I've bought a c220 cdi estate, very similar to the 406 in simplicity, no DPF or DMF goes well and returns better mpg than the 406 and it has a timing chain. Before you delete me we still have a 406, the wife's car - and mine a lot ...
