Re: Third gear

Seconded, although if its only in third the synchro ring is probably worn. Does it go into the other gears without baulking? If its the synchro it will probably be worse when cold, the thicker oil causes drag which can slow the box down.

Re: How many forum users still actually drive a 406

I do occasionally but its my wife's regular driver, it was mine to until I got this Merc but there are a number of aspects where the 406 is better. Its quieter and rides better, the seats are more comfortable as are the headlights. The merc is faster and slightly better on fuel which surprises me bu...

Re: Life span of catalytic converter?

I have a C220 diesel with 231k miles and the original cat, but having said that it keeps going into limp mode and I pretty sure that its because the cat is clogged and causing back pressure. Mind you with the 6 speed manual box it will do 70 mph at 2000 rpm which is about as fast as I want to go, an...

Air re-circulation flap doesn't

When I started using my new 406 estate I found, or at least my wife did that sometimes the windscreen steams up although you could clear it by putting the aircon on it was quite severe. My first thought was leaking heater matrix, but fortunately not. I was looking at the air intake in the scuttle fo...

Re: driverside lock for central locking ?

Mine is the same, I think the lock mechanism has become disengaged as it feels normal when you turn the key but doesn't do anything but haven't got round to looking at it yet.

Re: Rear Anti-Roll Bar Clamps Parts Availability

I have just let a friend have the two from my scrap car as there just don't seem to be any available. I have been looking at others that might do but they are not 'normal' brackets in that one side appears to be longer than the other. I think your only source will be the breakers, my scrap car is a ...

Summer tyres  I've just paid £100 for a pair of all year round ones - and I thought they were expensive. :frown:

Re: Fuel Filler Flap

'Omega' came up with the same solution as me and probably the simplest. Cut a length from a fairly weak coil spring of appropriate diameter and fit one end under one of the self tappers opposite the flap. You can experiment with the length and strength to get give the right amount of 'push'. When yo...

Re: Very light whining noise after cambelt change

I have had problems with that adjustment, can't quite see the point, the new belt is not going to be that different, I did do it and it ended up against the forward stop but checked the timing and it was spot on. An over tight belt will whine, I have had this problem and just slackened it off a litt...

That's a possibility that hadn't occurred to me, I will check.

Flashers at wrong speed

We have just put our newly acquired 03, 406 estate on the road and it drives very well - mostly, one thing is that the flashers are running fast as though there is a bulb gone, but there isn't, they are all working. Any suggestions?

Re: 406 heater

Ah, yes. On most cars they seem to be one above the other. Do the pipes get hot even when there is no heat from the heater? If not it probably is air if they are it could be an airflow flap problem in the heater. Seeing the pipes are side by side it probably wont make much difference which one you d...

Re: Oil pressure light can!

As long as you don't rev it while the light is on it shouldn't do much if any damage but I would agree - oil and filter change.

Re: 406 heater

It is sometimes difficult to get all the air out of the heater, if you disconnect both pipes and pour water into the filler until it runs from both of them, refit the bottom one and fill until the water comes out of the top heater pipe and the top hose, then refit them, that should do it.
