Re: Optomistic or what

Looking at the front grill it will be a 2.1 12 valve, very good engines I ran them for 15 years in XMs, smoother than an Hdi but not quite as economical although better than the 1.9. Do suffer more with head gasket problems though until they have been replaced with laminated ones.

Re: Optomistic or what

I like the performance, my son has a 2.2 Coupe but I am not so keen on the engine, I had one in a C5 and the fuel consumption was dreadful, although my lads is very good. I like the 2.0. because its fairly simple and seems to last forever.

Re: Optomistic or what

There is a very nice 2.2 executive estate on Ebay this morning with about 80k on it, about £200 last time I looked.

Re: screwy 406

Oh dear! If its one of the short ones its fairly easy but the full length one is a bit of a pain as you have to remove the centre conole. I drove an XM for about 20k miles with the filler cap unscrewed and very rarely had to put water in it although with the cap on it blew it out every time I put my...

Re: screwy 406

If you take the top cambelt cover off you can have a look at it, if it looks in fairly good condition it will probably be OK for a bit, if it looks as though its suffering it would be safer to change it although I understand the principle of throwing good money after bad. I bought the two estates I ...

Re: screwy 406

I fear that at least one of the problems is a leaky head gasket, they are generally much longer lasting than the XUD ones and I have never personally had one fail but I have come across a couple when looking for a car, first thing I always check. You could try running it with the filler cap loose, i...

Re: Mayonnaise on dipstick

Try giving a long run and get it really hot, if the mayonnaise then dispersal its probably just the result of the engine never getting hot enough, if it doesn't probably needs further investigation.

Re: Battery current at rest - Update

I tested my car again today, the current draw was over an amp at first then dropped to 600ma, I disconnected the alternator and it made no difference but when I looked at the meter again it had dropped to 96ma, I reset it and checked again sometime later, still 96ma, not what it should be but consid...

Two for a disintegrating crankshaft pulley, if you can get close enough to it you will probably find cracks in the rubber.

Re: Battery current at rest

Hi Paul

Thank you very much for that, just the information I needed, I will make a note of it in the manual. I obviously have a fault on both cars, I will start by checking for alternator leakage as I have come across that before.

Thanks again

Re: need advoce maf sensor

Assuming this is a diesel engine it won't run rich because if you increase the fuel in you will increase the power out as the diesel has no throttle control when you press the accelerator it just increases the fuel input. The only thing that can make it run rich is an obstruction in the air supply. ...

Re: Breakdown Cover from another perspective

I've been with the AA since 1958 and they have always served me very well, they recovered my CX from North Wales once but over the years I have called on them a number of times. The year before last the premiums had risen to a ridiculous level so I had a little tussle with them and got a very good r...
