Re: 406 estate, heater blower just stopped this morning.

Thanks Ginger They were similar faults to the XM ones, the fuseholder in the under bonnet box was favourite, I have had to replace one of those with a 'floating' 30 amp fuse holder, that cured it. I have also had several transistors fail in the motor speed controller, in fact I have a repaired XM in...

Re: 406 estate, heater blower just stopped this morning.

Strangely the fault has disappeared for the present, I'm expecting it back any time though. I would think the most likely culprit is the power plug on the heater but have been to busy to look.

Re: hope its going to be worth it !!

How are your brakes? the vacuum pump also provides servo assistance. I noticed the same thing. I disconnected the pipe and could feel very little vacuum, replacing the pump improved the brakes as well. Make sure you are checking the pipe from the pump, which is on the gearbox end of the cylinder hea...

Re: XUD/TUD coasting/fuel arguement

A mechanically injected engine will normally continue to deliver fuel at tickover rate when the throttle is closed which on one of mine corresponded to around 300 mpg. An electronic system shuts right down under overun conditions using virtually no fuel, so for best economy keep it in the highest ge...

Re: 406 estate, heater blower just stopped this morning.

Yes it is I believe a full MUX, it's an 01 reg but seems to have been made in 02?. 110 Hdi LX. Our other one is an 01 GLX but appears to be only semi MUX I did make a reply with this info yesterday but the broadband failed just as I sent it. :x Thanks Steve and Doggy I will just have to work my way ...

406 estate, heater blower just stopped this morning.

Completely dead, I suspect a fuse or as in the case of the XM the fuse holder self destructs, but I don't know where it is, probably under the bonnet but haven't looked - its cold out there. :frown:

Can anyone assist?

Thanks

Re: front top mount bearing seized

I replaced both of mine for the MOT on an 01 GLX estate, its not to bad if everything comes undone OK. I got the bearings from ebay for not very much money. You will need spring compressors but otherwise its fairly straight forward, I seem to remember there is a very good video on You Tube which I r...

Re: hope its going to be worth it !!

Check all the vacuum pipes round the back of the engine, connected to the three solenoid valves, if no leaks pull on off from the input side and put your finger over the end and feel how much vacuum there is. I recently had the same problem and it was due to a worn vacuum pump not opening the wasteg...

Re: Optomistic or what

I replace most of my major appliances with second hand ones, but of course they are getting newer, the only new ones I have bought in about the last 10 years or so have been the Bosch washing machine, which failed after about 10 years but it only needed new brushes and has since done another two or ...

Re: Optomistic or what

Looking at the front grill it will be a 2.1 12 valve, very good engines I ran them for 15 years in XMs, smoother than an Hdi but not quite as economical although better than the 1.9. Do suffer more with head gasket problems though until they have been replaced with laminated ones.

Re: Optomistic or what

I like the performance, my son has a 2.2 Coupe but I am not so keen on the engine, I had one in a C5 and the fuel consumption was dreadful, although my lads is very good. I like the 2.0. because its fairly simple and seems to last forever.

Re: Optomistic or what

There is a very nice 2.2 executive estate on Ebay this morning with about 80k on it, about £200 last time I looked.

Re: screwy 406

Oh dear! If its one of the short ones its fairly easy but the full length one is a bit of a pain as you have to remove the centre conole. I drove an XM for about 20k miles with the filler cap unscrewed and very rarely had to put water in it although with the cap on it blew it out every time I put my...
