Re: 406 exec Estate gearbox

I wouldn't worry about it, I have never had a 406 gearbox fail.

Re: 406 exec Estate gearbox

Yep, I have two '51 reg almost identical estates, on has reverse on the left the other on the right, most confusing when I change cars. I thought the l/h reverse was the later box but apparently not as my wife has an 03, 206 and that has the r/h side reverse.

Same colour as the two I have. It is indeed in very good condition, if it was an Hdi I might well be interested myself.

Re: Dual mass flywheel

I appreciate RWB's explanation, never heard such a complete one before, that would then account for the fact that all the high powered BMW diesels have auto box's although you can get a manual in the petrol version.

Re: Central locking and keys

I fitted a new fob and one of the tiny tact switches in my wife's 206 estate as it was damaged, works a treat now but when I first fitted it wouldn't lock although if you locked it with the key it would unlock with the fob, problem was sticky lock mechanism on the drivers door, gave it several doses...

Re: Dual mass flywheel

A lot of conflicting advice on this one. The 90hp engine doesn't have one but it it the same as the 110? I have heard of people changing them with no problem but others that say it causes vibration, so the answer is I don't really know.

I have never had a DMF fail on a 406 - yet.

Re: 2.0. v 2.2 Hdi engines.

I must admit I have had that, in fact it was binding when I bought the car and it can seriously affect the consumption. I didn't realise it was binding because after a while it would unstick but the steering didn't feel right, in fact I almost went to change the steering rack. Then we went to the no...

Re: Just saying hello

Hi and welcome to the forum

I have two Hdi estates and I personally think that they are the best cars Peugeot have made, certainly the best I have had and I've been driving for over 60 years.

Re: 406 niggles nearly all fixed

I have two hdi estates, the one I am driving now is also gutless at below 1000 rpm but goes like a train over 2000 but the other one is OK at low revs, have swapped the MAF's over but makes no difference to either. I did find that the vacuum pump was weak and fitted the one from my scrapper, that im...

Re: Worsening driving standards

I gave up using any lane on a motorway but the nearside many years ago, I'm quite happy to drive at 56 mph on a long journey, It doesn't take much longer and you arrived much less tired and have a considerably improved fuel consumption.

Re: 2.0. v 2.2 Hdi engines.

I think driving style is the primary factor but I always drive like a granddad, although I usually know where I'm going, my driving style hasn't changed for many years, about 60 mph and rarely above 2000 rpm and my brakes seem to last for ever, I only use them as a last resort. Prior to havin...

Hi Ginger

Welcome to the forum. I always buy estates but my son has 2.2 diesel Coupe and its an amazing car, nice to drive, fast, and will do over 60 mpg or whatever that is in litres/km. I'm very impressed with it.

That's better than my C5 but not as good as my first 2.0. 406.
