Re: End of an era

It nearly was for me, unable to find a decent 406 at a reasonable price I opted for a C220 Merc diesel which is OK but doesn't have that well worn slippers appeal of the 406. Anyway as I have already told you I had a very nice one dropped into my lap for very little money and the car is indeed in ve...

Re: instrument panel faults 406

Sounds like a dry joint on the PCB. XMs use to suffer from this problem and it was usually the connectors on the edge of the board, they would develop a crack around the soldered joint. Examine the board carefully with a magnifying glass and you might find the problem.

Re: Just bought another 406 estate!

Mine is the same, you pull away and something screams at you and the parking brake is on. Mine needs a bit of maintenance - when it stops raining, I will let you know how it goes. Is the ratchet supposed to click when you apply the brake? Mine doesn't but it holds OK. I agree with RWB, pretty everyt...

Re: Fuel choice for your next car?

Common rail diesel made in the early 2000s. Simpler and longer lasting engines, relatively cheap (all I can afford) and you stand a good chance of being able to repair them yourself. In addition to the 406 I now have a C220 Cdi Merc estate from 2001, no DMF no DPF and its presently done 220k miles a...

Re: Just bought another 406 estate!

Re the hand brake, on my first one I fitted new shoes and drums/discs, cleaned and lubricated the adjusters and set it up exactly as per Haynes manual , no better than before. I have even changed the cables, the long one broke when the MOT man was trying to get a 'pass'. Immediately after I have adj...

Re: Just bought another 406 estate!

I will have to take my belt off sometime to see if I can find the source of the noise, I think I will have to take a photograph of it.

Re: Just bought another 406 estate!

Yes I did, I wouldn't have noticed except that I had a terrible clatter from the front which I thought was the timing chain. In order to get the cam cover off you have to remove the injectors, one came out OK and another wasn't completely stuck but two were fairly well carboned up but youtube videos...

Re: Just bought another 406 estate!

The cars that I was buying for £300-400 are now fetching silly money, I think some people have realised just what a good car they are. My son sent me an article someone had written in praise of the 406 and he came to the same conclusion as me, that they are probably the best car Peugeot ever made. I...

Re: Just bought another 406 estate!

I wonder what the colour of the other one is then, its a pale metallic blue but several shades darker. Yes there is a variation in the colour, the drivers door looks darker as does the rear passenger door and wing. If they have been sprayed it must have been a long time ago. Still deciding what to d...

Re: Just bought another 406 estate!

This one is amazing - the handbrake works, I feel inclined to take it apart and find out why.

Haven't shown the inside because it wants cleaning.

Re: Just bought another 406 estate!

This one practically dropped in my lap, its light metallic blue but different to the other one, I thought it was blue when I saw it but when it was here it looked silver, a much paler blue than Moonstone? 2003, 110 Hdi 120 something thousand miles and looks very tidy. My local friendly MOT man told ...

Re: sill skirts ???

Not that I know of, I'm afraid you will have to bite the bullet. My local man made a very god job of fabricating and fitting most of a sill to mine this year for less than £200 including the MOT.

Re: How many forum users still actually drive a 406

I still have one, mostly driven by my wife. I would probably have one too if they hadn't got so ridiculously expensive. I still think they are the best car I have driven in over 60 years of motoring, certainly the most reliable. I now have an equally old C220 Cdi Merc estate, its nice but I still fe...
