Re: old topic, 406 replacement ?

The only car I have found that can give as good or a better ride that the 406 is the Mk3 C5. I recently bought one with steel suspension and the ride quality is superb, I'm sure the hydropnumatic one would be even better, but I have gone for simplicity (relative).

Re: Whats my car worth?

I thought at first it was the petrol one as top of the page which would have reduced its saleability but if its diesel, especially that colour (my favourite) it could sell quite well. Gone are the days of the three to four hundred pound ones as most of mine were, most are now fetching north of five ...

Re: Anyone know about modern Mini's?

If there is no leaking water evident I would strongly suspect the head gasket. Is there any evidence of coolant around the filler cap? You could try putting a receptacle under the end of the overflow pipe and see if coolant is being blown out.

Re: Ebay Etc. Just "Run-In" 406s

No, the Merc has gone, the MOT was nearly up and it was probably going to cost me as much to get it through as it was worth, and after driving the C5 I wasn't bothered about the Merc any more, the only thing I miss about it is the terrific low down grunt it had, you rarely needed to change gear, but...

Re: Ebay Etc. Just "Run-In" 406s

I tried all sorts of cars that were supposed to ride well Welly - none of them did but this one really blew me away and its dark metallic red, my favourite colour. Yes its an oiler, 2.0 16v a bit of an unknown engine to me but its only done just over 100k miles and the engine bay looks like new, as ...

Re: A possible Dogmobile #4?

That shouldn't be to difficult to fix, GLX's are rare and a 2.2 Hdi even rarer. I would have had a go at that, if I needed another one.

Re: Ebay Etc. Just "Run-In" 406s

My 'bargain' low mileage estate I bought earlier on in the year has gone on now, head gasket leaking and I don't have the desire or stamina to do it now, mind you I still sold it for more than I paid for it to a local chap who was prepared to take it as it was, it was that good he though it worth sp...

Re: New car suggestions

I did consider a Mondeo but on investigation these don't seem to have a particularly soft ride either. Nothing else I have ridden except perhaps some '50s cars (Humber Hawk or Snipe particularly) have a ride like the C5 or are so easy to drive. It seems the only chance of a good ride is something on...

Re: New car suggestions

For years I have been looking for a really comfortable riding car without success, most modern cars seem to have a hard ride. some ridiculously so. I ran hydropnumatic Citroens for getting on for 30 years and they were certainly the best at the time. The C5 their last offering I was not all impresse...

Re: No throttle response at all

Not familiar with petrol models but the brake problem could indicate a lack of vacuum which on diesels controls also controls other functions. Diesels have a vacuum pump the petrol models likely derive it from manifold depression.

Don't know what year a Mk 1 is but I have an 01 estate in silver with one. You would have to remove it yourself though, we are in Dorset.

Re: front springs Question

Personally I think they got the 406 just about right, very good compromise between comfort and handling. I have a later one with 16" wheels now which had made the ride harder, I'm, going to change them for the 15" from my old one - but then I'm old.
