rear suspension

when I go over a bump/hole in the road there is a heavy thump from the rear suspension ,which has got noticeably louder lately
The car has 167k on it , and never had anything done to the suspension am I right in thinking the rear shocks are shot or could it be something else ?
any ideas ???

just checked the vacuum pressure from the pump and its at 25 at tick over to 30 in-Hg when I rev it a bit. so the pump cannot be the problem ? just checked the throttle cable spring clip again and its has come off somehow ! :frown: so that wouldn't help, so stuck a tie-wrap on to hold that in place!...
