I got my son's 2004 Passat 1.9 diesel...189,000 miles... through the test yesterday...it failed on both sides top suspension arms (common VW/Audi fault), brake light o/s, holes in both front wings (sharp edges)...changed both front shockers and springs as they have to come off to do the suspension a...

Re: Rear handbrake adjuster jammed full on (cant move Car)

Apart from trying to use something stronger than a screwdriver and using a hammer on the adjuster, take out the screws holding the disc onto the hub then through a wheel bolt hole use a punch or something on the handbrake shoe metal frame and knock it backwards towards the backplate and or use somet...

As far as I'm aware eml on on any car is classed as a fail.
Did you read the testers manual?

Re: New 'stricter' MOTs...

The correct information on whether an EML is on and fails the test is that it only applies to diesel vehicles used after 1st July 2008 and for petrol vehicles used after 1st July 2003. The brake fluid test is that a failure is for dirty brake fluid. Regarding anything used for emission control like ...

Re: humming noise

A wheel bearing noise will be there all of the time when coasting out of gear...it may STOP on cornering for a short while. If the noise goes away when the brakes are applied then you should check the brakes before anything else. An out of shape tyre will give a humming/buzzing sound as you drive al...

Re: humming noise

If the problem is a wheel bearing then the humming noise will be loudest with the car out of gear and coasting.
Check the tyres for being out of true...egg shaped or wobbling on spinning them around.

Re: Immobiliser activated, car won't fire

Is the key icon showing?
The last time I had this problem I had to re programme the keys with PP2000.

Pull down the seats and remove the inner trim around where the shock absorber enters the car interior.

Re: Crank pulley bolt problem

Glad you got it sorted :) I thought you would do it with the locking tool....the Peugeot one has a 90 degree bracket on it for bolting to one of the tin plate mountings if I remember. I've had quite a few like this which usually undo by fitting a bar and socket to the bolt and held by the driveshaft...

Re: WANTED: Coolant degassing tank (D8 V6)

Given the other problems, I would cut it in half and clamp it together with a decent gasket in the middle...should be fairly simple to do.

Re: WANTED: Coolant degassing tank (D8 V6)

That should be very easy to repair.
Cut it across the seam where the leak is, grind it flat on each side and glue it together.

Have you tried bypassing it and looking at the effect on the cooling system?

I remember from the old days when we used to get these in for service and the customer hadn't left their keypad number....1111 always got them running, it's a default service pin.

Re: sluggish starting

To eliminate a dropped valve or major engine problem such as seizure, turn the engine by hand using a spanner or socket and bar (ratchet) on the crank pulley....it will be easier with the glow plugs removed. If the engine turns normally then look elsewhere. First thing I would check after making sur...
