2003 1.8 estate spares or repair

2003 1.8 petrol Rapier estate for spares or repair. MoT failure, needs brake servo and most likely master cylinder. 143,300 miles with full service history. Recent front brakes, new clutch in 2015, tyres all good including spare. Everything works except of course the remote central locking. 2 keys! ...

Re: MoT failed, needs servo

OK, I've given up the search for a brake servo. I'll post a "For sale" in case any of you would like the car for spares or repair.

MoT failed, needs servo

After 4 years of reasonably cheap motoring my 406 (2003 petrol 1.8 estate) has failed its MoT. My local Peugeot engineer says it will need a new servo, and a new master cylinder because you might as well... And part of the exhaust. But he doesn't think he can even *get* a replacement servo, and reck...

Re: Mayonnaise on dipstick

2000 miles and 1 new MoT later the mayo has not returned. Maybe the K-Seal did the trick, or maybe it was just the longer journeys and healthier running, but all is well for now...

Re: 7 seater wanted

Thank you all for your feedback - even the white van suggestion. (I like your thinking  . My wife, on the other hand...) But I've not seen a people carrier for hire for that long weekend for less than about £300, and nothing closer than Gatwick Airport or Brighton. Probably just in an expensive...

7 seater wanted

My extended family and I are going to a wedding over the August bank holiday weekend, so we'll need a 7 seater. I've looked at the cost of hiring an MPV or a minibus for that weekend, and it's eye-watering. So in the spirit of "Better the devil you know", do any of you have a 7 seater 406 anywhere n...

Re: Mayonnaise on dipstick

Thank you all for your replies. After another oil and filter change, and a 400-mile round trip, there are still traces of sludge on the dipstick, so I'm not optimistic. I'll try and get her through the MoT at minimal cost next month, and start looking for a replacement. I'll miss her, because everyt...

Mayonnaise on dipstick

Hi all, I have a 2003 1.8 estate that's done 135,000 miles. Just noticed mayonnaise on the dipstick - but there isn't any under the oil filler cap (yet???) and the coolant level doesn't seem to have dropped. I did an oil change 100 miles ago, but the car mostly does short journeys. Any chance it's n...

Letters on the tailgate

Hi all, an E has come unstuck from "P U G E O T" on the tailgate of my 2003 1.8 Rapier estate. Do any of you know what these letters are stuck on with? It looks like some sort of putty inside the back of the E. Naturally I don't want to reattach the E with anything that will damage the paintwork. Ch...

Re: Bought another 406

Hi all, interesting to read about a D9 with rear drum brakes. Do any of you know if they are interchangeable with the ghastly disc/drum set-up? Could changing to rear drums be a way of eliminating all the disc/drum handbrake problems? I'm guessing the rear drum is like the one on the 405 - I've owne...

Re: Manual Gearbox - what is the point?

Spending £600 on a new clutch last summer reminded me of what a good idea automatics are  . (No choice really - the clutch release bearing failed a week before we were due to set off for Italy on holiday.) I do prefer automatics now, but have never yet found a suitable one nearby when I've bee...

Re: Other drivers pulling out on you but they don't care?

The only thing I really don't like about the 406 is having the horn button in the centre of the steering wheel, like a 1950s car. If someone cut me up when I was driving my old 405, I could flash the lights and blast the horn with one finger, while still taking evasive action. Much safer. Did any 40...

Re: Handbrake locked on, passenger side

Sorted - a combination of brute force and physics. Saturday morning I went out and bought the biggest, meanest screwdriver that would still fit through the hole in the drum. With the extra leverage I could finally free off the adjuster. Finished the job - the handbrake is now solid on 7 clicks on a ...

Handbrake locked on, passenger side

Help please! I went to adjust the handbrake. (2003 1.8 Rapier estate.) Driver's side rear drum: turned the adjuster until the shoes locked against the drum, back one click, sorted! Passenger side: turned the adjuster until the shoes locked against the drum, and it wouldn't go back any clicks at all....

Re: Lock barrel assembly fallen off

The lock barrel worked loose again. This time, when I'd got the door card off I took a closer look and found the root cause of the problem. The nut that holds the lock barrel in place screws onto a stud that's fixed to the inside of the door handle. (Sorry, I should have taken a picture.) This stud ...
